According to information from CNN, former president Donald Jr.Trump has insisted that his legal team will focus during his impeachment trial on the unconfirmed election fraud allegations he has been making for months. Trump has opposed categorically the advice of his lawyers to focus on the questions of whether it is lawful to prosecute a president after his term in office has ended. Now Trump is constructing a new legal team that will be defending him during the trial.
House Representatives have formally filed the indictment against Trump in the Senate last Monday for inciting insurrection on the Capitol. The trial is scheduled to begin on February 9th giving Donald Trump 2 weeks to prepare his defense for the impeachment trial. If he is found guilty, the House of Representatives could prohibit him from running for president again.
The former President Donald Jr. Trump is accused of inciting his supporters to storm the Capitol in Washington on January 6th to stop the certification of President Joe Biden. A two-thirds majority in the Senate would be required for a guilty verdict against Trump. In addition to the 50 Democratic Senators, at least 17 Republicans would have to vote against Trump for a conviction. Currently, It is unlikely that a two-thirds majority will be reached, especially many Senators believe that holding a trial on a president who doesn’t hold office is a violation of the constitution and can be used against former Presidents, an argument that the Democrats reject.
Donald Jr.Trump is the first president in US history to face impeachment for the second time. The first impeachment against Trump was for his efforts to get dirt and campaign support from Ukraine against President Joe Biden, but the Trial failed in the Senate in February 2020.
